About Pen, Paper & Pixel

PenPaperPixel.org was established in 2004 during the golden age of third-party d20 publishing by game designer, software developer, and ENnie Award winner Jans Carton.

At a time when personal computers were largely seen by tabletop purists as a distraction from pen-and-paper roleplaying, Jans recognized a profound opportunity: digital tools should not replace the magic of gathering around a physical dining table with friends, miniature figurines, and physical dice—they should accelerate math and administrative overhead so players can focus on pure storytelling.

The Pioneer of "Computer-Assisted Gaming"

Jans Carton created some of the very first web-based utilities for the d20 System and Dungeons & Dragons 3.5 Edition:

These contributions earned prestigious industry recognition, including an **ENnie Award** at Gen Con and permanent academic citations in literature regarding game design. His projection guide became an official citation on the English Wikipedia encyclopedia article on Computer-Assisted Gaming, immortalizing Pen, Paper & Pixel in the annals of roleplaying history.

The Modernization Era: Rebuilding for 5e and 2024 Rules

Twenty-one years later, the tabletop landscape has evolved, but the need for fast, uncluttered, respectful utility tools has never been greater. Modern commercial platforms often subject Game Masters to heavy 20MB framework bundles, forced account logins, subscription paywalls, and slow server response times.

In 2026, Pen, Paper & Pixel was rebuilt from scratch to honor Jans Carton's original vision while leveraging cutting-edge web standards:
